Merchant Marine

Commercial ships of a nation, whether privately or publicly owned, and the personnel who operate such ships, as distinct from the personnel of naval vessels. Merchant ships are used to transport people, raw materials, and manufactured goods. Merchant fleets can be important economic assets for nations with limited natural resources or a small industrial base. By carrying the commerce of other nations on the seas, a merchant fleet contributes to its home nation’s foreign-exchange earnings, promotes trade, and provides employment. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (founded 1943) is in Kings Point, N.Y.

Maid in the Philippines

By Michael Alan Hamlin.

In the romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan starring Jennifer Lopez, a lowly maid in a five-star New York hotel lives a Cinderella-like fairy tale. Dressing up in clothes left behind in a room she is cleaning – as a lark – presents the opportunity to meet – and be appreciated by – a wealthy hotel guest played by Ralph Fiennes. The wealthy guest is swept off his feet, and a romance ensues.

In the no-so-romantic comedy, Maid in the Philippines, 170,000 domestic helpers from the Philippines who work in Hong Kong – and represent a whopping 71 percent of all domestic helpers in the former colony – get robbed by both Hong Kong chief executive Tung Chee-hwa
and Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Tung, desperate to rein in a growing budget deficit, slashed minimum monthly wages for domestic helpers last week and turned their lost earnings into a tax his government will collect from the maids’ employers.

Now, let me define what a Naval Architect is

Naval architecture is an engineering discipline dealing with the design, construction and repair of marine vehicles.

Due to the complexity associated with operating in a marine environment naval architecture is by necessity a co-operative effort between groups of technically skilled individuals that are specialists in particular fields, often co-ordinated by a lead naval architect. This inherent complexity also means that the analytical tools available are much less evolved than those for designing aircraft, cars and even space craft. This is due primarily to the paucity of data on the environment the marine vehicle is required to work in and the complexity of the interaction of waves and wind on a marine structure.

The areas of expertise filled by naval architects are typically:

  • Hydrostatics (ex: trim & stability)
  • Hydrodynamics (ex: resistance and powering, sea keeping, maneuvring)
  • Arrangements (ex: concept design, volume & access)
  • Structures (ex: global strength, seaway responses)

It’s nice to be inform that some profession exist. If you might ask one of your professors if such profession exist and if she says it’s not so popular, you could tell her that it’s quite popular in the modern world.

Effectiveness of Marine Radio Communication using Digital Selective Calling in Distress Situation at Sea

Mark Alvin Metilla
Abstract
The need to assess the proficiency of the Digital Selective Calling is necessary for better and safer environment at sea. This research, thus, discusses DSC limitations and improvements as tool in aiding seafarers during distress situations at sea by assessing its major components of the device and weighing the effectiveness of Marine Radio Communication through testimonial from the World Wide Web.
Earlier studies show that DSC has been proficient as compared the older version of Marine Communication. However, it also has discrepancies in terms of radio communication. In the thorough assessment of DSC, presentation of data show that DSC needs to improve on its aural alarms for reception of HF distress messages, including relays, should sound only if the distress position is within 500 nautical miles of the receiving ship’s position. It also has to manage on its operations used establish initial contact between stations and should allow more information transmission. Lastly, it has to establish a greater array of channels and scope of network.
