Abstract
The need to assess the proficiency of the Digital Selective Calling is necessary for better and safer environment at sea. This research, thus, discusses DSC limitations and improvements as tool in aiding seafarers during distress situations at sea by assessing its major components of the device and weighing the effectiveness of Marine Radio Communication through testimonial from the World Wide Web.
Earlier studies show that DSC has been proficient as compared the older version of Marine Communication. However, it also has discrepancies in terms of radio communication. In the thorough assessment of DSC, presentation of data show that DSC needs to improve on its aural alarms for reception of HF distress messages, including relays, should sound only if the distress position is within 500 nautical miles of the receiving ship’s position. It also has to manage on its operations used establish initial contact between stations and should allow more information transmission. Lastly, it has to establish a greater array of channels and scope of network.
